Heat Wave

At long last warm, clear, dry, bright days and it is the middle of October, now we have the summer we never had. Quite surreal and no visitors to boot. In weather like this we would expect yachts coming and going but nothing, it is quite an empty sea out there. We can get on with the work though, looking forward to our holidays and making plans for the winter. Since the last post and the rut (ongoing) it has been a busy place.

Late Evening Spy

Late Evening Spy

Even after the weeks stalking I like to keep an eye on the stags movements , every morning and evening I’ll head out just to see who is about and what they are up to, Sunday  night found me up at the trig point with perfect weather for spying the length of the Island, I was not disappointed. There was plenty activity as the deer took advantage of the late warm sunshine, keeping to the higher ground. Monday morning was not so good when I caught a stone hidden in the rushes and flipped the bike, right into a puddle, here we are righted but wondering how I did that?

How did that happen.

How did that happen.

I would have taken a picture with it on its side but the petrol was pouring out of the tank, I’ll watch out next time.

Lots of wee Jobs

Lots of wee Jobs

There are a lot of loose ends to finish, the fuel in the Dry Harbour genny shed was one of them, but I had to wait until Mr Ebay sent the jubilee clips, ten minutes and the job was done and that was on the way home after flipping the bike. Another tick off the list.

The 'In House' architect.

The ‘In House’ architect.

L got her drawing board out to help Gill at Rural designs put together the plan for the new house. Quite an exciting time and now with a little less disturbance we can put our minds to the new development.

Lots to get on with and get organised, so here we are last Tuesday last heading to Portree to get to the bank, shopping and most important the architect.

Heading To Portee

Heading To Portee

It was a beautiful morning and very calm, great weather where you do not have to worry about the sea state.

Looking to Fladda

Looking to Fladda

After a very relaxed day out in Portree I headed back, the sun streaming into the cabin almost too hot, incredible.

A Great Day

A Great Day

Back to the day job next day and my usual hour in the morning, hour in the evening looking out for deer, these guys were unconcerned about the targets.

Target Pratice

Target Practice

We had not managed to sell some of our sheep this year, the wedders(or wether). But these are at there best just now so we have decided to put two of them in the freezer. We will just have to use them ourselves,  we cannot sell the meat as the sheep would have to go to the slaughterhouse first, go through the proper channels!! The cost does not justify the end. These are the rules and regulations which makes it not possible for us to butcher them and sell the meat here . This is quite strange because we can cull the deer and butcher them for selling but not the sheep, they live almost side by side. To send them all the way to the local abattoir (Dingwall) then back to Rona is a bit mad, so mid week I was in the larder doing a bit of butchering, needs must as the weather was very good and I’d rather be outside for sure.

The Wedders

The Wedders

The weather being so good it was not really a surprise to see a yacht sailing into the harbour, Yacht Full Moon arrived Thursday a last outing before going to the boat yard, they probably enjoyed two of the best days of the year.

Last Gasp

Last Gasp

Friday we had a go at clearing the trees around the house site, just a few to get a better perspective of the area. As it turned out it made such a difference to see the area cleared and we could see how the building would fit perfectly into the hillside. And as a bonus the winter stock of firewood is getting bigger.

Winter Firewood

Lee and Mel arrived in the middle of it and were very impressed with the site, it was catching the late sun and very warm in the late afternoon.

Surveying

The guys were over to have dinner with us and were very keen to see how to dress a lobster, always keen to eat lobster myself and L were very happy to oblige.

Time For Tea

Time For Tea

Of course anyone invited to dinner has to muck in and mayonnaise is always the one we like to get our guests to attempt, this time it came together very quickly. Our new Rona aprons had arrived (ideal Xmas presents) they work very well with bits of lobster flying around.

With a Little Help Fro My Friends

With a Little Help From My Friends

The evenings entertainment went well and we had a relatively early night which was good because first thing it was very cold and slightly foggy, I was keen to get out to check on the deer.

Misty Morning

Misty Morning

I was hoping to catch a stag in the mist but no one was obliging, however up at the higher hills around Dry Harbour I was pleased to see last years Master Stag back on the beat roaring for Rona.

The Last Outing

The Last Outing

As it is getting near the end of the stag season I’ll not bother too much this week going out early and seeing the stag above will just about be my last early morning outing.

Great Early Light

Although if the light is good you never know, there is always a picture to take.

Then Down South

Especially if it is this clear.

Going For a Paddle

Going For a Paddle

The guys in the cottages have their kayak with them, easy to transport these blow up kayaks are very popular, this one looks pretty robust, some of the plastic ones have been prone to bursting with too many sharp edges and even in hot sunshine, they expand too much.

Late Roar

Late Roar

Although I’m not going out now to look for stags the bay around Big Harbour has been resonating to the sound of three stags at different points roaring across the bay at each other. Which makes it easier to see them on the skyline, especially if they tell you where they are.

Late Roar

Late Home

To end a wonderful week the cold frosty nights with promise of the Northern Lights have been very welcome, a real sense of a proper Autumn after an improper summer. The weekend had started ok this Saturday with no changeover it was a relaxed day. But Sunday it was pretty grey. MV Spindrift was in for a visit and MV Seaflower. So it was busy enough and the Vodafone mast was down (yet again) so no phones.

Monday morning it is all go, MV Aspire is coming with stores and the architect for a look at the site and just on cue the rain has started, great!!

Indian Summer

Our pal Wallace was due to arrive on Saturday 3rd, the second week in October is when the Red Deer Rut generally really kicks off on Rona. So, since the middle of September I have one eye on the hills around looking for wandering stags. They tend to keep a low profile apart from an area in the South of Rona where they hang out, but during the rut they can pop up anywhere and when the rut starts proper, it is always the most interesting time for deer and deer management on Rona. The weather has improved immensely and the deer have been keeping to the higher hills, this small group of hinds have been up here for most of the month. So far this week it has been an Indian Summer for sure.

Still Looking for Stags

Still Looking for Stags

It is a great time of the year to get up at first light (not too early) and head out. It is quieter now with very few yachties and the season is changing, so a quick trip South or North depending on the wind can usually give me an idea of what deer we have.

Found One

Found One

I came round the corner just 300 yards down the South path and here was this guy standing just off the road, I don’t know who got the biggest surprise. I knew the stag but had not seen him since last October.

The Black House

The Black House

The stag above was Wednesday morning and with a pretty full day ahead I had a quick look around then got ready for a Portree trip. I had a few tings to do, get to the bank, see the architects, visit a few houses they had built, stay overnight then pick up sheep in the morning. It was so good to have some settled weather at last and an enjoyable run out to Carbost and then Fiskavaig to see the ‘Black House’.

First Thing

First Thing

It was a beautiful morning in Portree, Caley was bang on time with my 6 new gimmers bought from Valtos on Skye. We got them aboard before 8am and after a wee wait for the daily papers I was on my way back.

New Stock

The light at this time of the year is so good it is not difficult to find something to photograph.

Then The Sun Got Up

Then The Sun Got Up

I got home mid morning and not wanting to let the sheep go right onto  the pier, we had to take them singly up to the park. If I had let them off the boat who knows where they would have gone. Not very conventional and maybe it is about time I got a sheepdog.

No Escape

No Escape

Mostly they were very happy to pull me up to the park. Once in the field they were settled and feeding away quite quietly.

Walkies

Saturday came, we had the changeover but only with Wallace coming. Squirrel our old ferryman who was on the MV Stardust had taken a trip out on MV Aspire with some American friends who took off on a video tour of the harbour.

Squirrel's Pals

20 minutes later they were off skirting round an overnight yacht visitor up from Inverinate who was on the mooring. A late visitor who had been trying to get to Rona all summer but the weather had not been too clever.

Late Yachties

They left around mid day and late on Kenny, Brian and Henry from Shieldaig arrived on their Yacht Sula for an overnight visit.

The Last Yacht?

The Last Yacht?

Myself and Wallace took a toodle up to the Applenet mast and had a spy for deer, we saw quite a few deer around and were quite confident of seeing more the next day.

Wallace, Just Looking

Wallace, Just Looking

I took Wallace up North on Sunday morning as the wind was out of the South, I dropped him off and he walked back to the Lodge to get an idea of deer on the ground ready for the weeks stalking ahead.

A Bit Blue

A Bit Blue

I got back to Big Harbour mid morning just in time to see Kenny and crew setting sail. it was a good chance to get some photographs of the new yacht but without my specs I could not see the settings on the Nikon camera and ended up with some very blue (cold) shots. Sometimes these cameras are too complicated.

It was a beautiful morning with not much wind but later on they found some at the top of Rona and enjoyed a pretty fast sail home.

This week it is all about the stalking and we have opened another page for that on the menu bar. The Rona Red Deer Rut 2015.

Short Days Great Weather

Been a good few days, but busy days. Plenty visitors but not many yachts now. Just the odd ones passing by, probably heading to their winter quarters. The season continues on Rona with the cottages busy for a change, on Friday last we were over organising our guests for Saturday and remembered the ‘Orache’ that Andre pointed out on the shore. It is delicious in a salad or pasta so a quick look and we caught the last of it as it had started to wilt.

Orache.

Orache.

Saturday came and went, 6 mountain bikers arrived for a day and a half tour of Rona. Quite a ‘stramash’ on the pier with wheels everywhere.

Bikes galore

They settled into their overnight accomodation but were not long in getting going, wanting to maximise their visit, they headed North to the Lighthouse.

Enjoying The View

We bumped into them at Dry Harbour, it is not very often we have to reverse back to find a passing place for oncoming traffic!

Off They go

Off They go

First thing on Saturday morning I turned on the tap and nothing came out. Not again, I thought I had fixed it but no. It had emptied the smaller of the two tanks. I checked the big one and it was empty too. Not the best when we had an extra 6 for showers. After the changeover I set too to find the leak and after a lot of digging I found the pipe down at the bunkhouse was loose and pouring out, no wonder the tanks were empty.

Here we Go again

Here we Go again

A simple connection but they do come loose, perhaps someone stood on it. It must have been leaking for a while given the three times it has run dry lately. With too many connections it is a given every year that this will happen.

The boys arrived back at night and we had ‘devised’ a new system for feeding them. Instead of a Supper Club, we are now offering a ‘Crew Pot’ suggested by Ali.

Dinner is Served

We think the boys enjoyed our Cullen Skink, slow roast venison , fresh bread and spiced apple cake. There was nothing left.

The Crew Pot

On Friday I was hearing yet another noise from the old quad, it was the exhaust bracket this time. Here we go again, Sunday morning out with the welder.

Now The Brackets Broken

Now The Brackets Broken

Sunday, mid morning two yachts appeared, one sailed on by after dropping its sail and thinking about coming in. The other picked up the mooring but as I was down on the pier the quickly dropped it again. I wondered what they were doing as it was pretty breezy. Turned out they were only in for a few hours and as our mooring states the yachts who pick it up must pay (well why shouldn’t they) even for short stays. I did notice the name of the yacht which has some history here!!!!!!!

Worth a Try

As it happened they left around lunch time and we loaded up the mountain bikes for a bumpy trip to Raasay.

We got the boys onto Raasay for the next part of their trip and the Sea Eagles came out to give us a display when we were sailing through the gap.

Back top Monday, at last I got a chance in the glorious warm sunshine to service the new JCB, suffice to say it took all day to get everything greased and oiled up to level. Next time full oil changes.

But as I am looking for stags on the move as the rut is not far off, I’m generally up early and was pleased to see the view on going over to Dry Harbour in the early morning.

We missed the ‘blood moon’ but it is pretty impressive at this level anytime.

The young stags are on the move but up until this morning the bigger stags have not appeared (quite worrying).

The weather being so fine it is pretty much flat out getting everything ready for the coming winter.

It was good to get the roof of the bunkhouse done at last.

Looking Good

I had been smelling engine oil for a day or two from the bike, but I was thinking it was with me working on it. But no, it was a self tapper screw that had been used to fix the engine cover, it was too long and had through time bored a hole into the engine, so to-day I must get some liquid metal, seems that might sort it.

Near Disaster

Last night the evening was calm, another trip out to see if the deer were roaring or on the move, the sunset was not so spectacular but always good to see.

Off to Portree now, just getting the blog finished before I go. Glorious day, sunny and warm . For once I’m looking forward to the trip.

Autumn Equinox – 2015

The Autumn is fully underway now that the Equinox has passed. As usual we were watching the weather and it was a bit unsettled but nothing that we could not handle. We had a good trip to Portree with Ali and Clive on board. Despite the NW swell and wind.

Leaving Rona

Leaving Rona

Ali was reading the blog on her return home and I had said when they were here that we could never put the full story down when we write a blog post. After a pretty full week, now they know!!! The simple reason is that there is so much going on it would take forever to put it all down, some of it we would not want too. But here we go, this past week on Rona as full as possible with pictures and as little story as possible!!

Topographical Surveyor Robbie

We are building a new house so Robbie came to do the Topographical survey. That was Tuesday, he had Big Harbour all to himself whilst we were in Portree.

Water Problems.

We woke up Wednesday morning, I went to the toilet, flushed the loo…. no water. So that started the day.

Checking The Genny

Got that fixed but had to check the filters in the genny shed, so I checked the genny too. Oil changed due as it is getting near its time.

Checking Stock

Then thought…..”what about paint for Calum and Irene when they are here in November, that will be the job then”. So I took stock of the paint, must get some white.

I did not think kit was that windy.....

I did not think kit was that windy…..

Down the pier then to get the jeep but thought, Andrew and Lyndsey saw a mink, better set the traps. Spotted another job, the stand for the sheering lines was blown off.

Mink Trap Days

Mink Trap Days

Got some mackerel off the boat and set the mink traps up. It is colder now and with Mr Mink being so close to our hen run, needs must.

Paperwork/Housework

Paperwork/Housework

We had paperwork to prepare for the architect that had to be done plus some housework. Then the photo album that I have been sorting out 60,000 images in a mess so it is taking quite some time. 2 hours at that.

Tidying Sheds

Tidying Sheds

With our visitors being here for a week it was a bit hectic so everything gets thrown into the various sheds, then when I get a space I tidy up ready for the next stage. After a half morning in the ‘office’ I needed to get out, in between the showers it was sunny and cold which was good for a few hours of outside work.

New Fuel Lines

New Fuel Lines

I saw the new fuel connections when I was clearing the bench which made me remember the new fuel tank at Dry Harbour, unfinished.

Bigger Storage.

Bigger Storage.

I was not comfortable that there was no tap on the pipe but I had bought one on Tuesday in Portree so over I went to Dry Harbour to fit that, of course I forgot half the things I needed so I must go back.

A Wee Spy

A Wee Spy

On the way back and at this time of the year, we are always on the look out for wandering stags. The rut kicks off around now, it is the best time for sure. I try to carry a pair of bino’s at this time so on top of the brow it is good to have a spy North and South.

Mudgaurd Repairs

Mudgaurd Repairs

Back to the garage and I had noticed the mudgaurd flapping, a quick job with the self tappers and yet another job ticked off.

Back to Rona Lodge, more new house discussions, calls to Denmark and before you know it, it is 8.30pm and I must phone Kenny in Shieldaig. 9.30pm, half an hour of ‘Lewis’ and then bed, phew, just another day.

Well and Truly Stuck

Well and Truly Stuck

Got up this morning there is a stag by the shore with about 8 hinds and calves, very fine fellow and in tip top condition. It is 6.30am so I thought, I’ll go out for a look/spy. I saw a few deer up the track then headed North. Twenty yards into the forest in an effort to avoid the cottages so early in the morning and I went right into the axles on the old track, completely stuck, damn. I went for a walk then an even longer walk home, got the winch, the other ATV, got the bike out and then had breakfast at 10.00am.

I thought I would upload the photos for the blog as I was having tea, but Apple in their wisdom has changed iPhoto to Photos, be aware it is not very good. So here I am another hour wasted fighting with the computer.

More later.

Autumn And Better Days

We are off to Portree to-day, just for a few hours but needs must. The ferry is coming first thing with a surveyor who is going to survey the site and surrounding area where the new house is going. It is a grey start but there is a promise of a better day. Fingers crossed.

Sunny days

Sunny days

Been good this last week, most of it. There has been plenty sunshine but come last weekend it became business as usual as rain and wind came back in. The colours are changing slowly but it is like everything else a little bit late this year.

Sausage Days

Sausage Days

We started last week with a mega venison sausage day. We had so much mince we thought we would try out a new sausage recipe and I can report they are very tasty.

The Left Overs

The Left Overs

Clive and Ali were over from last Tuesday to help out for a week and first day as it was calm we had an afternoon out on the boat. Their dogs were very keen on the bones from the deer we had just butchered!!

Planning Day

On their ferry last Tuesday Graham the Council Planning officer gave us a visit he was interested to see the site and discuss our plans, fingers crossed for a good result when we eventually apply for planning permission.

On The Spot repairs

On The Spot repairs

The first job was to carry out an on the spot (temporary) repair to the jeep. We had hoped to replace it when the landing craft came but we could not find anything suitable. As it always happens when the landing craft left the jeep started to give some mechanical problems.

Back To The Landing Craft

With the weather during the week being settled it was a pleasure to get going tidying up outside.

Fuel Days

The fuel tanks are all full, first time for a very long time.

More Repairs

More Repairs

More breakdowns at the end of the week, Mr Honda sells wonderful quad bikes but their big failing is their starter motor brushes and as you can see we have had a few. I can change them in my sleep now, must write to Honda and complain.

The Poly Tunnel At last

The Poly Tunnel At last

Clive and Ali were here a couple of years ago in February and enjoyed fantastic weather, they did not expect sunshine after following the blog all summer but you never know. At last we got the poly tunnel cleaned up, it has been a bit of an eyesore this year since the plastic blew off. But with Ali and Clive’s gardeners expertise we have it ready for next season, great.

Breakdowns (yet Again)

Breakdowns (yet Again)

Saturday morning I went up to get the bike all ready with the starter repaired. pressed it into gear and the gear lever snapped, what next. That was a time consuming repair, welding it back up but I got there ‘eventually’.

Changeover Days

Changeover Days

It did not affect the changeover and our new visitors arrived, Dave and Sharon left, very happy after their relaxing week enjoying the best week of weather for a while.

Hubsan Helo

Hubsan Helo’

Saturday afternoon was very sunny, we had visitors from Applecross and Badachro. Andrew and Lyndsey were coming down on their RIB for an evening with us. We were looking forward to seeing them and catching up, Andrew is one of the SAR pilots in Stornoway so we often see the helo’ passing. They had given us a small remote controlled drone/helicopter that was beyond my understanding (the instructions were in Chinese) but in the evening Andrew got it going after it had been looking at me for months. We had a lot of fun flying it round the house. Unfortunately the blades are all bent now so back to the drawing board.

Helicopter Days

Last time they were here with friends they were expecting their first child so we were keen to give their daughter Robyn her first toy box which she seems to like very much, Andrew is threatening to turn it into a box cart!!

Robyn

Sunday was a down day, a wee walk in the afternoon over in the forest looking for chantrelles was the only exercise, but it seems we were too late and found just a few.

Forest Days

Forest Days

Monday, yesterday was a good day. Again the jeep needed attention but this time a bit more serious. The door pillar was rotten and needed the hinge welded on, just as well I had Clive to hold onto and help me fit the awkward door.

More and More repairs

More and More repairs

That done we got on with the strimming and some firewood. A long day and then two yachts came in just on dark. It seems a bit late but there is still time for a few more.

The wind is blowing out of the NW but not too strong, so hopefully the journey to Portree will not be too bumpy this morning.

Big Day To-day.

I was lying in bed this morning and listening to ‘Out Of Doors’   Radio Scotland, with Mark Stephen and Euan MacIlwraith. Always worth a listen in on Saturday morning. To-day it was a Land Reform special (from Skye) which is quite a contentious issue at the moment in Scotland. As an employee of a foreign owned Island/Estate, I thought I’ll just lie there and listen (until 8am, first long lie for a week!). I did not feel too guilty as I kind of thought it was going to be a very long day. Very interesting it was and still available on BBC iPlayer.

The thing is, living here in the real world of private ownership of a part of Scotland’s land, I just wonder how many people actually appreciate just how much it costs to live and look after one of  the remoter parts of Scotland and on cue here we have to-day’s exercise on the viability of sustaining a community (albeit 2)on  Rona.

It started with the cottage changeover. We have, as many know, three holiday cottages, renovated at quite an expense to then go towards making the Island financially sustainable.

Grey Day Changeover

Grey Day Changeover

MV Aspire arrived on time as usual after a calm sail up from Portree. Two on, two off (plus dog Poppy). It would be best if we could have three lots of visitors to the cottages every week but unlike Skye’s bonanza year we are having a poor year of cottage guests. We got our return visitors David and Sharon into Escape, went through the mail, had lunch then got prepared for the next shift.

Thinking about the radio programme, I commented to L that we had not heard from folk who work on, or are involved with, privately owned Estates apart from Moray Estates’ Manager. I had worked on that Estate many years ago as a contractor. I always found it to be very pro-active with lots of projects but a far different area to Rona with much more of a productive asset.

Waiting Patiently

Waiting Patiently

Landing Craft ‘Spanish John II’ had been booked to take the annual fuel, new JCB, building and fencing materials, quite an add on expense to the Island (or any Island’s economy). We had found a cracking JCB to replace the ‘bargain’ buy we got from Hugh MacKay Plant Hire over 8 years ago. So that prompted the landing craft in the first place.

Big Excitement

Big Excitement

To maximise the space we always stock up on things for Rona so there was quite a load, more than the usual fuel which was almost half the price of the last delivery by the landing craft.

Feeling The Way In

Feeling The Way In

Of course it was raining, but you cannot pick the weather, just the tide. Greg the Skipper had been a bit later than he expected but the tide was perfect, Hugh had come over for the day to give a welcome bit of support. His old (and our) JCB was waiting for the off but we soon had to resume its service to save a bit of time.

Waiting For The Ferry

Waiting For The Ferry

I did not have enough containers for the fuel so there was a bit of frantic activity finding homes for it all.

Non Stop

Non Stop

Once the boat arrives we never stop and Hugh took off the load whilst I transferred fuel.

Juggling Fuel

Juggling Fuel

With 4000 litres of Kerosene and 2000 litres of diesel there was plenty of running about on the shore.

Jewson's Delivery

Jewson’s Delivery

All too soon the shore started to fill up and we were running out of space.

Then It Really Rained

Then It Really Rained

It was grey but dry but in the middle of it all the rain came on proper. But we hardly noticed as we were chasing the incoming tide.

Road Pipes

Road Pipes

With two JCBs we were winning, and all of a sudden the landing craft was empty and I put the old JCB onboard. We had put it on Gum tree for sale the previous week and the phone never stopped, I could have sold twenty old diggers, there must be a business out there for very old diggers (if you can find them). As it was it was heading now to Inverness.

Almost ready for the off.

Almost ready for the off.

All that was left to do was empty a couple of IBCs of fuel. With the help of the electric and petrol pump that took half the normal time and Greg was loaded and away. Despite dire weather forecasts the wind stayed away and it was late in the evening before the forecast gales came.

Heading back to Mallaig

Heading back to Mallaig

The landing craft had a bumpier ride home, stopping in Kyle to unload the digger and an old ATV motorbike.

The ‘Spanish John II’ left at 4pm, I had a quick cup of tea but I still had to go some as the tide was coming in fast and the fuel was still on the shore. Three hours later I got home to the Lodge for a very welcome beer.

Once the first beer had gone down the second can was much more relaxed and we had a chat about the cost of to-day’s exercise. Probably £20,000, ouch. But very welcome to support the community of two on Rona!! Which brings me back to the costs involved in owning ‘the land’. Even if you do nothing with it, it will still cost. However we also reflected on the 200 people who lived here pre-1920/30s who left because of very little outside support and a desire to have a better life, how things have changed

Next week we have a couple coming to give us a hand, we look forward to hearing how they see the future of Rona.

Autumnal Air.

People ask when is the best time to be on Rona, my answer is always a bit vague because it is always the best time to be on Rona. But, the best time for me is undoubtedly waiting for the Red Deer Rut to start and that is the Autumn and that is now. We stalk the deer here because we have a deer management programme, for the well being of the herd and the Islands ecology, that is what we do. However, the true stalker appreciates the fact that the job they do takes them out into the natural environment and allows them to enjoy the season at its best. Forget the actual end result, this week it has been the scent in the air of heather, pollen, cool, possibly a sort of richness after the growth of the year, the summers end. Also the odd smell of the stag or the hinds hanging in the air when you pass through the forests or out on the hill. Electric.

Spying, Enjoying The View.

Spying, Enjoying The View.

Coming up to when the stags chase the ladies (the Rut) I always want/need to be out in the forest or the hill just to watch, to see how things are going and this week has not been a disappointment.

Myself and Nick went out, walked a lot and saw some deer but the main event was the weather, the views and the the company.

Wedding Present

Nick had given me a call earlier on asking me to come to the pontoon, where I was delighted to be handed a belated and gratefully received wedding gift of wine and Champagne, never wasted on Rona.

I woke early and because the forecast was looking fresh I headed out to lift the creels and see if there was a late catch to stock up the freezer. I was not disappointed and had a couple of hours cooking crabs when I got back. I had hoped to bump into the Minke Whale, Sea Eagles and Dolphins we had seen the day before when we were out looking for deer. But no sign which is often the case.

As it was the late summer on Rona and dry at last, I got a chance to shift one of the excess mattresses  to the Skyescape cottages, have bed will travel. What a difference to be working and not to have waterproofs slowing you down.

Late In The Day

Late In The Day

Nothing for it at the end of the day but to enjoy a late glass of wine out front and enjoy a midgie free evening, bliss. That was mid week and the sun was shining for the third day running, a record this year. It was warm at last and hardly any yachts about, nice and peaceful.

Getting Ready For The Landing Craft

Getting Ready For The Landing Craft

Thursday I was keen to get ready for the landing craft because if I left it until Friday I would encounter some sort of problem and I was not wrong. In the meantime the digger was sold and moving on, the fuel was coming so I got rid of the remains of the last delivery of kerosene  into the tank at Rona Lodge. The ATV might go off too so it had to go to the shore just in case.

Dry Harbour After The Sunrise

Dry Harbour After The Sunrise

This morning I got up early it was such a bright start so I  went for a run over to Dry Harbour looking for deer. The night before I had been over up to my usual spying place and had seen quite a few young deer, hiding in the bracken. So I was keen to have another look.

Spot The Deer

Spot The Deer

There are 5 deer in the picture, plain as day but maybe better to blow it up. After my spy up North I headed South and all of a sudden the exhaust on the (old) bike blew. So that was to-day’s job. Just in case I needed parts I thought I’d fix it if I could and set too.

I was happy to see a bit of meat on the pipe when I eventually got it off, otherwise with my welding I would blow holes in anything thinner. The welding was not pretty but at least it has saved the cost of a new one, at £200 + Vat, not cheap.

So here we are on Friday night chilling out but waiting now for the changeover and landing craft tomorrow.

Digger Days

We are getting a landing craft on Saturday if everything falls into place. On it is a new JCB for Rona, the old one is not past it ‘yet’, but this new one came up and we felt it was a good buy so we went for it. We then put the our JCB on ‘Gumtree’ last Friday and the phone/emails enquiries have never stopped, wish I had ten of these things to sell. Seems they are like hens teeth as the saying goes.

For Sale/Sold

For Sale/Sold

Last month we got the new motorbike so one of our old faithfuls has to go to. It will be on the landing craft on Saturday heading to Skye.

Surplus to Requirements.

Surplus to Requirements.

The weather last week meant a lot of inside days but with plenty projects to catch up on the week was far from wasted. When the rain did stop the midgies came out and it was pretty bad. I would not like to be camping around here just now!! What I did have to do was deal with an overflowing septic tank. Last post I thought I had cleared it but no.

Great Job

Great Job

After much dodging between the showers and roding, poking and swearing, there was nothing for it but to open it up. With Hugh on the end of the phone I got my head round what was happening and started digging around. Finally after having to lift the manhole, concrete and pipes out (because I could not get into the manhole) I found the blockage and after a bit of serious poking, got the intake clear. All of a sudden we were working again and I had a sigh of relief. It is one of the major worries the septic tank but after 20 years of use it just keeps working despite the odd blockage. Now to put it all back together.

Nearly There.

Nearly There.

Like most jobs we had to wait until Saturday to get bits and pieces to finish it off. So the job stopped on Friday. That afternoon we had Robin and Heather visit us on their yacht Rowan IV. Rowan IV was built in 1938 by Mcgruer’s of Clynder, on the Clyde. Well known in its previous life when it belonged to Robin’s great uncle, Dr Robert Carslaw, who wrotes the book ‘Leaves From The Rowan’s Log’. Nice to see a classic yacht, carefully restored on the mooring. We had a lovely evening and walked them down to the pontoon, just in time to see Yacht Tramontaine trying to anchor.

Rowan IV

Rowan IV

The wind was gusting 25 knots plus and they were having all sorts of problems but just as it got dark over an hour after they came in they managed with the help of an extra anchor.

Tamontaine

Tamontaine

You would think with plenty room in the anchorage they would have been able to set the anchor but the yacht was getting the full force of the NW wind and was a bit of a handful. Saturday we had the changeover and the weather had promised sunshine but we woke to grey skies. Kevin mentioned some fishing gear at the mouth of the harbour and was concerned that a yacht/boat arriving late might not have seen it as it was in the middle of the channel. So mid afternoon I went out and pulled it round the corner, half way there the alarms went off in the boat, the starboard engine had been giving trouble and I could not find the problem, here it was back again.

Moving The Fishing Gear.

Moving The Fishing Gear.

By night it had calmed down and it was a lovely evening, the forecast was for calm sunny Sunday but again it was grey and misty. I went out for a look for deer first thing but beat a hasty retreat after the midgies started to get on my nerves, the prospect of dealing with a dead deer in flat calm weather did not appeal.

Grey, Misty But Promising.

Grey, Misty But Promising.

It was a bit of a funny day Sunday dealing with the many calls about the digger, also trying to sort out the 60,000 images on the various computers and hard drive. iPhoto drives me mad. But we are nearly there!!!!! By the afternoon the sun was out and at last a late summers day.

No Entry

No Entry

Monday was a beautiful day, Yacht Escapade was on its way and we were keen to get up to date before they arrived. We had an invite to dinner, Yogi’s lobsters for tea!! First of all we were trying to get the old beds upstairs in the holiday cottages but the hatches proved to be too small. It was worth trying just for the view. Back to Big Harbour and Kenny was in on MV Seaflower, he gave me a hand with the engine alarm and we were all set to change bits over from the other engine when the alarm stopped. A wee rustle of the wiring and it came back. A bit of pushing and pulling later and the alarm had stopped completely, seems we have a loose wire.

I got the septic tank started off with a bit of concrete late on then it was Kayak Monday with three lots of kayaks passing through. The last couple were obviously strangers and we could see that they were looking for a camping place. Where they went was probably the worst place on Rona for midgies, so I took off on the boat and showed them where would be better. It was so calm that the forest edge where they had been planning would have been a nightmare.

Last night I seem to remember promising Nick from Yacht Escapade a half days stalking so I had better go and get ready for that, good to see the breeze getting up.

Could Do With A Holiday.

It was a hectic week last week trying to get everything done prior to our Inverness visit to get our hair seen too, we were beginning to look a bit Feral!!! Andre and Kasia had been over to help with the butchering of the young sheep. More used to cutting up deer, we were scratching our heads a bit but it worked out in the end. They later reported the chops were the sweetest they had tasted, just delicious. Which was good to hear on the back of the good price we got at Portree mart on Monday last for our lambs, £40 each.

Clean Up

Clean Up

If there is one bottle of wine to buy this year this is it, Andre gave it to Lorraine for her birthday mid August. Fortunately L shared it with me!! Excellent.

The Volnay

The Volnay

Michael and Gail our Findhorn yachting friends had left us on Tuesday last week on a beautiful sunny day, they were heading home. Gail was keen to tell us about her seminar ‘We Do Not Die’ which sounded intriguing, however we are highly unlikely to get to it  in Findhorn, but you never know.

Promotion

Promotion

I’ve been visiting The Findhorn Foundation where they have lived for many years and talking to them both keeps us up to date as to what they are up to, sounds like it is a busy place, maybe over the winter we will get a chance to call. Always worth a visit.

We had a ferry with day visitors from Portree and to pick up the climbers who had been in the bunkhouse for a few days on Tuesday Mid day. We should have left on this one but we were pretty busy and L’s tooth was not too bad.

Mark And The Climbers

Mark And The Climbers

That night, Lorraine’s  toothache got really bad and we had to get away earlier on Wednesday than expected to get an emergency appointment in Portree. A fantastic dental service that the local NHS clinic run. Before we got going on Wednesday morning the door lock fell apart in the Lodge, just what I needed but nothing unusual with so many things on the go on Rona.

Unlocked

Unlocked

Could have done without that. All too soon MV Aspire was here and we were off.

We  got to Portree in the pouring rain early afternoon, L had a big back tooth pulled after much examination, tooth number two this month. Then onto Strathpeffer, via Inverness delivering 5 boxes of Rona venison to our kayaker visitors Heather and Stuart who were here a couple of weeks ago.

Yotam

Yotam

We arrived late at Strathpeffer but Liz my sister had been experimenting with her favourite cookbook at the moment, one of Yotam Ottolenghis, Jerusalem. Steamed leeks, beetroot, pomegranate seeds and spicy walnut salad. Really lovely after a very long day.

Wonder What They Are Up To.

Wonder What They Are Up To.

We got up in the morning to find the bomb squad at the end of the road, never heard what they were up to? After a long day shopping we had a quick visit to see the grandchildren who were on top form despite my attempts to scare them.

No Pressure

No Pressure

Friday was a quieter day as we were just going as far as Shieldaig. After shopping in Dingwall we headed off, L to Torridon Hotel for afternoon tea, me out on Kenny’s boat with guests. Kenny and Linda’s son Magnus and partner Paula were home for a visit and had some American friends with them. A wee boat trip was planned and we headed out passing the Sea Eagles on Shieldaig Island who were looking well fed.

Catching Tea

Catching Tea

Magnus could not wait and prepared some shichimi on the way in.

Fast Food

Fast Food

Back to the house, Magnus and the cooks got going with the catch of the day, after a late dinner we got to bed at 1.15am up again at 6.30am then over to Portree to catch the Saturday boat at 8.45am, phew.

Change Over in Reverse

Change Over in Reverse

Our guests were almost ready to go, although the weather made for a poor end to their holidays but they were all happy and we think kind of sad to go.

Loaded up and Away

Loaded up and Away

Saturday was a blur, the weather was set to deteriorate so we got sorted out and settled down when late in the day three yachts arrived, quite a surprise to see them with the forecast as it was. There seemed to be far too many people for three yachts, there were loads of them.

3 Yachts In

3 Yachts In

After the poor forecast on Saturday the weather on Sunday did not disappoint.

Torrential

Torrential

We had a plan, our beds had arrived on the Tuesday boat but we had no bases, I was going to make them. Calum had cut the lengths, so I got them down and started to put them together. Not a bad job when the weather is so bad.

The Beds are on Their Way

The Beds are on Their Way

Got as far as I could on Sunday and called it a day, flat calm forecast for Monday so I planned a fishing trip out in the Kyle.

A Good Catch

A Good Catch

The breakdowns started (again) before I got started. One of the boat engines alarms was playing up but as it was flat calm I fished away, took some creels in and headed back with some tasty shellfish.

Winterised

Winterised

I got the creels onto a hard stand then headed back to the bed bases, which was not so good a job on a sunny afternoon.

Phase 1

Phase 1

Got that finished and went up to see if the bait had defrosted. I thought it was herrings but it turned out to be white fish, wish I had known that before I headed out on Monday morning.

Frozen Solid

Frozen Solid

The flies were giving the defrosted fish a hard time so I chopped the slab up and put it in the tub covered ready for salting.

The View From Our Septic Tank.

The View From Our Septic Tank.

Lorraine went down to the hens first thing this morning and shortly afterwards I heard a shout, I had been getting ready for a bit of electrical wiring. The septic tank was overflowing, great. So that was this morning sorted out. A really good job just after breakfast, who would be a plumber. But, it is amazing how it works as it has not been emptied for twenty years. A bit of rodding here and there, a pipe off and a look at the connections, here’s fingers crossed that I have cleared the blockage.

The Missing Eggs.

The Missing Eggs.

When I went to get my morning egg (before the septic tank episode)the trays were empty, turned out the hens had stopped laying but I was suspicious because one of the sheep had closed the henhouse door last week when it broke in to the pen for a feed. So Lorraine went foraging and came back with fifteen eggs and chantrelles, a good haul. Poached eggs for breakfast tomorrow. After the mornings refreshing work I got down to the new beside lights, much scratching of heads and looking for bits later I got them sorted out and working, next thing I have to make a head board, that may be Thursday’s job, we will see.

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light

We were really looking forward to our time away, but toothache sort of messed us up a bit, coming back tired but relaxed and then to nothing but dramas since. Although we did miss the water running out at the Lodge last week!!! Tomorrow we have to look into the dampness we found behind the bedroom wall, worrying at the end of the summer, what will it be like in the depths of winter. We hope to get it sorted, but in the meantime we could both do with a long holiday.

At Long Last, Some Summer Days

We never thought it would come but at last a few warm days of summer and some sunsets.

Flat Calm Fishing

Flat Calm Fishing

Having had a request from Chris who was in Escape with his family to go out fishing, the forecast looked unbelievable and so it turned out, after heavy rain over night the day steadily improved to a cloudless sky and warm weather, nothing for it but to go fishing.

Happy Kids

Happy Kids

Thank goodness for Mackerel, great fun for the kids who always get excited when they catch fish.

Competing

Competing

There is always a bit of competition to see who can get the most but once we had enough for tea we headed in, checking the lobster creels on the way back. It was just after twelve when we got back in and it was so hot.

A Quick Lunch then.....

A Quick Lunch then…..

We had the cottage guests booked for dinner so a part of the afternoon was spent preparing. I had gone to the freezer for langoustines but I found only three, that had been another reason to get out sharp in the morning. We had the three from the cooler for lunch with spiced chickpeas, very healthy!! No wine.

Prep'

Prep’

The dinner menu was langoustine, crab cake and black pudding.

Starter

Then slow roast venison on a bed of vegetables, very tasty. Pudding was the marmalade ice cream.

And Focaccia

And Focaccia

And Focaccia which we did not need. The wine was good, Andre took over a ten year old Riesling, followed by a Villa Bucci, excellent. Andre, Antoine, Christine and Kasia are our Sea/Skyescape guests. Andre from London, chefs and writes about Italian wine, so there was much comment about the wine and food which made for a really good night. Antoine and Christine (from France) brought over a very nice Sancerre to add to the mix, excellent.

Site Photos

Site Photos

Gill our architect (Rural Designs, in Portree) wanted photos of the site where we are going (hoping) to build the new house, it was a grey morning but a good excuse to clamber about the rocks to get rid of the previous nights excess. This is the view from behind the site which is on a shelf at the foot of this hill in Big Harbour. Nice view!!

The rest of the day was taken up with other wee jobs round the place, I pulled the plastic wing off the jeep yet again, so another duct tape repair was necessary and at last I got a chance to fit the new brake pads which took two minutes as Steve (Cat’ Orca) had loosened and greased the calipers earlier.

Instant Repair

Instant Repair

With the changeover happening the next day we got really busy in the afternoon, especially because we had to get the male lambs to Portree later on Saturday so that they would be there for the sale. The first time sheep had been sold off Rona since 1987.

Another great day

Another great day

It was a very windy morning on Saturday but it promised to get calmer by the afternoon, M V Aspire arrived and had to manoeuvre round the yachts in the bay. Calum was on board, he came out to give us a hand. Usually it is a bit of a rodeo penning the sheep without a dog, so with Calum’s help and the new Escape guests we got them into the fank for sorting out without any trouble.

The shepherds

The shepherds

Mark and his climber friends had come over on the ferry for a few days climbing the rock faces around Rona, they got ‘roped’ in too!!!!!

Ready for the Off

Ready for the Off

We tagged the sheep and got them on board, there are too many males here and with enough lamb in the freezer there is no point in keeping or feeding them over the winter. It is unfortunate that we cannot slaughter our own lambs and sell them. The law states they must go to a slaughterhouse and that would make the logistics of selling the end product here (the meat)  not viable. Which is a bit bonkers because we can shoot our deer and sell the venison but not the lamb. A shame because it would help the economy of the Island. We will see what they fetch to-day (Monday) at the sale.

At Last a Decent Sunset

At Last a Decent Sunset

Saturday night we had 9 yachts in, quite a few local ones but good to see the bay busy at last. Better late than never.

At Last a Decent Sunset

At Last a Decent Sunset

By 8.30 it was sun down and getting dark, a sign we are heading into Autumn and the winter not far away.

At Last a Decent Sunset

At Last a Decent Sunset

It promised to be a good day on Sunday and it was but first thing it was flat calm, there was a heavy shower and then midgies. So we did not see many sailors coming ashore, one by one they slowly left and the day became a bit more windier but the sun came out and it was the most wonderful Sunday, absolutely fabulous. There had been forecasts of winds but they were out of the East and not too strong.

Andre Preparing for Monday Night

Andre Preparing for Monday Night

I went over to Dry Harbour to see the guests, the Escape folk had a problem with the central heating which I quickly sorted out, back down to Seascape with new provisions for the cottages, both tenants are here for extended stays and both say that it is still too short. We are going over tonight (Monday) to sample Sea/Skyescapes cooking so we are really looking forward to that. It looks good already, I arrived in time to see Christine passing in the cooked Velvet crabs to Andre. But first of all they were coming over to watch the BBC Alba DVD /programme about Rona on Sunday night

So Naturally......

So Naturally……

So naturally we had to have a bottle of Fizz to round off the day. It was very pleasant to sit outside for a couple of hours until the sun disappeared. We had more food, just burgers, crab crostini’s, salad and crab cakes, then up to the cabin to watch the DVD. We ‘fished’ out Hugh Fearnley’s programme on Fishing and watched that too. A few years ago he came to Rona, was here for the day in the pouring rain and we had a really good day. Quite amusing watching the DVD from 8/9 years ago.

To-day, as Gail and Michael (Yacht Marguerite) from Findhorn and regular visitors, predicted, the weather is very good. The sun is up after a brief shower this morning that soaked the washing left out last night, it is now very warm and pleasant, just the way to start the week.
